What is an Excursion?

Excursion Content

Excursions by The Aperio™ are just like Journeys by The Aperio, but offer a shorter timeframe (three to four months versus one to four years).

What of Leadership Excursions focus on one of the eight categories of The What of Leadership and are a great way for individuals, teams, and an entire organization to tackle a topic of The What of Leadership. This is particularly great for leaders who are already in the midst of a Journey.

Who of Leadership Excursions focus on one of the two categories of The Who of Leadership (Inwardly Sound or Others Foucsed). It is a great way for an organization to get a large number of leaders exposed to the ideas of The Who* Not What Principle. If an organization is looking to shift its leadership cutlure toward Who* Not What, this could be an effective tool.

Excursion Process

The Aperio Method™

Excursions follow the same Aperio Method used in Journeys by The Aperio. This method is based on tested methodologies that have produced lasting results in organizations around the world.

Each Excursion participant is placed into a small group of 3-4 leaders. Small groups are designed to provide accountability and feedback throughout the Excusion.

Along with other small groups, each group is paired with an Aperio Guide who provides support and direction for the group.

Excursions begin with a Kickoff session to explain the concepts and prep for the quarter. Excursions end with a Wrap-up to help participants reflect and apply all that they have learned.

What happens IN-BETWEEN meetings is where the Excursion really happens.

Each small group executes an action plan throughout the Excursion that leverages their day-to-day experiences with the content to cultivate an extensive understanding of the Excursion’s focus.

The middle part of the Journey is different for Who and What based Excursions (more on that below).

The Process:

Step 1: KickOff

Each Excursion begins with an Aperio Guide leading a discussion of that quarter’s unique and singular focus. This is followed by the development of an Action Plan for each Small Group (3-4 individuals) to execute during the quarter.

Step 2: Apply

During the quarter, individuals will execute their Action Plan and reflect on this execution within their Small Group (via short, weekly updates, and once-a-month, in-person interactions).

The Guide will continue to send additional instruction; but the majority of the learning will come through peer observations, personal experience, and reflections.

This “Apply” portion of the process provides the most unique and lasting impact of The Aperio Method.

Step 3: Wrap-Up

The Guide will initiate a Reflection exercise 1-2 weeks before the quarter’s end.

A final discussion by the Guide will close out the Excursion to solidify the core message and application.

Who of Leadership Excursions are 4 months long and focus on the different elements of either Inwardly Sound or Others Focused.

Who of Leadership Excursions offers an optional, year-long engagement with an Aperio Guide. This engagement allows for small groups to continue receiving encouragement and direction on continuing their action plans around Who-based principles.
